The studio

Eleven people, one long table

Founded by Kari Halden in 2012, the studio works from an old rope factory on the Bergen waterfront.

How we work

  1. Listen

We spend time on the site and with the people who will use the building.

  2. Sketch

Many quick ideas, in pencil, discussed openly with the client.

  3. Model

Physical models at every stage, from site to door handle.

  4. Build

We stay on site with the builders until the last day.

What matters to us

We prefer few materials, used honestly: timber, stone, concrete and lime. We design for repair, so a building can be looked after for a hundred years rather than replaced in thirty.

  • Low carbon by default. Timber structures where we can, reused materials where they exist.
  • Daylight first. Every room is planned around where the sun comes from.
  • Built locally. We work with craftspeople from the region.
